How to Add Storage Space to a PS3

The Playstation 3 system can be used for much more than just gaming. You can store pictures, music files, videos and game data. You may wish to upgrade the storage capacity of your PS3 so you can store all the information you want and access it at any time. Why stick with 40GB when you could have 500GB?

Make sure that the system is in standby by placing your finger on the touch sensor on the front right of the PS3 until the indicator light turns red. Then flip the power switch on the back of the system to the "OFF" position. Unplug the PS3 from the power outlet and remove all cables that are connected to the console, such as controllers, HDMI or component cables.

Use an anti-static wrist strap (even though the power cord is disconnected) to avoid any electrical damage to the console. Then remove the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) cover on the left side of the console. This should come off easily, so do not force it and risk damaging the PS3. Once you have removed the HDD cover, you will need to remove the blue screw using a screwdriver. Again, do not force it. Nice and easy should get the job done. Raise the metal handle and gently slide the hard disk to the right. Using the metal handle, you should now be able to easily pull the hard disk out of the PS3.

Remove the four screws that hold the metal frame around the hard disk. Open the frame, remove the old hard disk and slide the replacement into the frame. Insert the screws to secure the new hard disk in the frame.

Take the metal frame containing the new hard disk and insert it back into the console, then slide it to the left. Replace the blue screw that you removed earlier and place the HDD cover back on the left side of the console. Now reattach your power cables and all other connections to your television. Turn the system on and you will see a command screen.

Now that the new hard disk is physically installed, you have to reinstall the Playstation 3's system software. The easiest way to do this is to go to the official Playstation website on your computer and download the latest PS3 software update to a USB flash drive. Insert the drive into one of the USB slots on the front of your console and simply follow the command prompts.
